Building Modernity With Blocks Of Tradition

The Ajrakh block print is a form of craft which has been around for centuries originating in Sindh before settling in Ajrakhpur, Gujarat (India). Ajrakh is hand printed on both sides by resist printing method using hand carved wooden blocks. The fabric is first printed with resist paste and then dyed. This process is repeated several times with different dyes to achieve the required patterns. The entire process includes natural (vegetable & mineral) dyes. Primarily the craft was practiced on Mashru fabric because during old days, there were restrictions on wearing silk, since silk comes from the slaying of cocoon and silkworm, touching the fabric was considered sinful. Ampar is committed to support remote artisans in India to sustain art culture and believe in conservation.
